I often hear people say, “In the end, all you have is your memories.” But when we look around at our elders, we find that this is not always true. Sure, they may have some memories of days gone by; but, often their memories are muddied by age and diseases like Alzheimer’s, Huntington’s, Parkinson’s and even certain kinds of Vascular Diseases. Additionally, research has shown that we frequently forget things, change and even fabricate memories.

So, if in the end we may not be left with our memories intact, what are we left with? This question bothered me until I found the single answer. And in many ways, it is the single most important thing that I have found.

In the end, all that you have left is the impact you have on others and how that impact has affected the world.

Nearly every religion in the world says the same thing. Who we affect in the world, and how we work to make it better is a central theme in nearly all of them.

As we talk to people and work with them, we touch them in seemingly ordinary but often profound ways. We touch them in good ways and in bad. As we touch them, we change their lives, and by changing their lives, we change the lives of those whom they touch. Like a stone thrown into a pool, the impact of how we touch people ripples outward through others into the great sea of the world around us.

As you think about this first rule, think about who you touch on a regular basis. Do you help build them up or do you tear them down? Do you help make their lives better or do you make it worse? Finally, what impact do you want to have on the lives of others and how can you better achieve this end?

As you go through the next section, you will find specific guidelines that will help you to have a better, positive impact on yourself, your life and the lives of those around you.
