One of the things we find about rich people is that they become are an expert in what they do and generally this expertise is in something that they love to do!  Why is this?

The law of compensation states that we get compensated in accord to the value we create for others.  This is direct proportion to:

  • Demand or need for what you do.
  • Expertise or ability to do what you do.
  • The difficulty there would be in replacing you.

Rich and successful people know that there are lots of people who do what they do every day.  To set themselves apart, they become an expert in what they do.  What is the difference between a low level manager and executive of a corporation?  The degree of expertise in what they do and how they do it.  Want to become indispensable?  Find something you like to do, become an expert in it and learn and grow with the times.

Research shows that it takes roughly 10,000 hours to become an expert in anything!  If you are going to become an expert, then you need to do it a lot, and it is very hard to find the motivation to do a lot of something that you don’t enjoy.  On the other hand, it is very easy to find yourself doing something that you love to do!  You will even find that your mind is actively engaged in things you enjoy, without even trying.  Even this time helps you to excel at what it is you want to gain expertise in!

But there is a bit more than simply becoming an expert.  You need to learn and grow with the times.  There have been many COBOL and FORTRAN programmers who were absolute expert programmers!  They loved to program!  But, they didn’t update their skills and because of that they became obsolete!  This is true of nearly every occupation!  This is one reason that nurses and doctors have to constantly update their skills.  Imagine going into a doctor and being told that you would sit in a room filled with incense while being leached to remove toxins.  Things change and just because you are an expert today does not mean you will be an expert tomorrow!  However, if you are an expert today, it is much easier to stay an expert by learning and growing with the times!  And this is what the rich and successful do!  They gain expertise and then constantly learn, grow and becoming more!  By doing this, they become indispensable and are able to receive the income they deserve for the value they create!

If you want to find a path to a better life, find something you love, become an expert, learn and grow and create value for what you can provide!
