We often hear that money doesn’t bring happiness, and research has even gone so far as to essentially prove this point on human psychology.  After a person gets their basic needs met, additional money does not create any additional long term happiness.  In fact studies show that you can live just about anywhere and in any condition and your level of happiness is likely to be about the same as any other place.

However, longer term research has found that people who are happier, are actually more likely to become successful in life.  Sonja Lyubomirsky, a professor of psychology at the University of California led a team of researchers that investigated the connections between life success, well-being and desirable personal characteristics.  What she found is that happiness is a significant factor for people to become successful in life.  According to Professor Lyubomirsky, “When people feel happy, they tend to feel confident, optimistic, and energetic and others find them likable and sociable. Happy people are thus able to benefit from these perceptions.”

This means that the mannerisms and actions that follow a from happy, positive attitude help set people up to become more successful than their less happy counterparts.  They are more likely to see the positive aspects of the things around them, and the solutions present in any problem.

Career success or money is not the only place where people who have a happy and positive attitude excel.  Again, according to Professor Lyubomirsky, “Happy individuals are more likely than their less happy peers to have fulfilling marriages and relationships, high incomes, superior work performance, community involvement, robust health and even a long life.”

While there are other characteristics that help people to have a successful life, no characteristic is as far reaching as a happy, positive attitude in laying the foundation of a quality life.
